Sudden Flight - Dick Cardenas
Sudden Flight - Dick Cardenas
RACE ONE – A sedate start to the day’s proceedings as the expected favourite (3-5 on), Sparkle Diamond had little to do in this 6 ½ furlong canter run. Winner number two for the champion trainer over the three-race day carnival.
RACE TWO – Another favourite Cold Pursuit obliging at even money to keep most in the Reggae 6 and the Ketch 9 going. Good come from behind effort by Cold Pursuit with the veteran Oneil Mullings in the saddle for trainer Ryan Darby. It was career win number four for Cold Pursuit from 49 starts.
RACE THREE – The trend of favourites winning came to a halt with Doctor Grey getting home at odds of 7-1. It was the persistence of jockey Roger Hewitt on Doctor Grey for trainer Joseph ‘Sardie’ Thomas, that enabled him to catch and beat Ricky Ricardo (Anthony Thomas).
RACE FOUR – It was a return to winning favourites following the break allowed by Doctor Grey in the previous event as Sudden Flight stepping down the claiming ranks ran out an easy winner coming down the five straight at odds of 1-2. The second winner thus far for trainer Anthony Nunes. There were 28 claims in the box for Sudden Flight with trainer Al Brown taking home the four-year-old.
RACE FIVE – Even after a bumpy start and darting to the left in a four-furlong contest there was no stopping the Ian Alexander trained, Jordan Barrett ridden Born Diplomat. For Alexander, it was his second win in 2022, from 20 starts and for Barrett it was win number four from 77 rides.
RACE SIX – After six starts, hitting the board all six times, the Richard Azan trained three-year-old Rum Puncher found a away to be in front when the winning post arrived in this seven furlong-contest. The win by Rum Puncher marked a return to the winners’ circle for jockey Dane Dawkins, who has been missing in action because of an injury sustained at exercise.
RACE SEVEN – Much was expected of She’s Fantastic in previous outings without any delivery forthcoming. Today, racing over five furlongs round, the filly blazed to the front and was not for the catching. The final time of 1:02.0 was slow even on what was a slow track. Keep an eye out in future engagements for second place finisher Awesome Prince. She’s Fantastic was the second winner for Dick Cardenas.
RACE EIGHT – Yellowstone reeled off his second win from three starts with aplomb, quickly going into the lead and then leaving rivals in his wake winning by seven lengths. Yellowstone seems to be a good one in the making. Winner number three for Cardenas.
RACE NINE – Amy The Butcher confirmed her Classic form of last year with a strong and composed victory in the feature Labour Day Trophy at seven furlongs. That win number in a row from two starts since taking orders from champion Anthony Nunes. For Nunes, Amy The Butcher closed a triple on the day, yet he had to play second fiddle to Cardenas and his four winners. Well done, Dick.
