The 100th edition of the Classic St Leger will be contested by three-year-old colts, geldings, and fillies on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Thirteen have been entered to compete over the two turns of 10 furlongs. Of the lot of 13, there is only one filly, Dream Catcher, trained by Jason DaCosta.

The St Leger is also the second leg of the three-year-old Triple Crown series, which also includes the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, and the Jamaica Derby.

The Quick Galloper explores the likely outcome of this Classic done in post-position order.

1 – SENOR BISCOTTI

  • Pedigree: Bay colt (February 6) by Savoy Stomp out of Baby P
  • Trainer: Richard Azan
  • Jockey: Omar Walker

Has been slowly getting into some sort of form. Based on his past performances, Senor Biscotti will be comfortable going the distance of ten furlongs.

Verdict: One to certainly watch, especially for the exotic wagers.

2 – BIGGER BOSS

  • Pedigree: Bay colt (January 27) by Bern Identity out of Woman Is Boss
  • Trainer: Jason DaCosta
  • Jockey: Aaron Chatrie
  • Equipment Change: Tongue tie on

Bigger Boss has been a source of major disappointment in his three-year-old campaign.

Verdict: The best he can hope for is a place on the board, and even that is stretching it.

3 – DREAM CATCHER

  • Pedigree: Bay filly (May 12) by Bern Identity out of Double Jeopardy
  • Trainer: Jason DaCosta
  • Jockey: Tevin Foster

The most outstanding filly of this three-year-old crop. Based on her five-race career thus far, Dream Catcher seems to prefer longer distances. As the winner of the 1000 Guineas, she is one of only two horses with the possibility of winning the Triple Crown. Going against the colts will provide the major test of her career thus far, yet she has the ability to stick fairly close to the pace and then come home flying in the final two furlongs.

Verdict: Despite the advantage given to the top colts, she will give her best, which might not be enough.

4 – SO LUCKY AM I

  • Pedigree: Bay colt (May 9) by Successful Native out of Ashtrid
  • Trainer: Ian Roberts
  • Jockey: Eric Haughton

Shows very little form coming into a race of this magnitude.

Verdict: Completely out of his league against these.

 5 – I LOVE BIRDIE

  • Pedigree: Bay colt (January 22) by Savoy Stomp out of Birdie My Love
  • Trainer: Fitzroy Glispie
  • Jockey: Ian Spence

Progressing slowly in the mornings but lacks the class of the top-tier runners.

Verdict: Coming out late, but still far behind the main contenders.

6 – SALUTE THE DON

  • Pedigree: Chestnut colt (March 19) by Aveenu Malcainu out of Abicadabby
  • Trainer: Gary Subratie
  • Jockey: Raddesh Roman

Won the first two-year-old race of 2026, and went on to win the Classic 2000 Guineas. He is now one of two in the St Leger with the possibility of winning the Triple Crown. While often playing second fiddle to his stablemate Stardom, Salute The Don produced the run of his life in the 2000, holding strong in the final furlong and displaying grit and determination. The only consideration is whether he will genuinely get 10 furlongs.

Verdict: He cannot be left out given his already proven quality.

7 – GOD’S PLAN

  • Pedigree: Chestnut colt (May 5) by Aveenu Malcainu out of Fearless
  • Trainer: Gary Subratie
  • Jockey: Phillip Parchment

Finding it difficult to compete with the upper echelon of this crop.

Verdict: Regularly handled by his mates at the Subratie stables, Stardom and Salute The Don. Now in the St Leger, no change is expected.

8 – WE JAMMIN

  • Pedigree: Chestnut colt (May 7) by Bern Identity out of Jammin
  • Trainer: Peter-John Parsard
  • Jockey: Reyan Lewis

We Jammin is an unlucky three-year-old. After destroying his rivals in the Prince Consort (7 furlongs), he did not compete in the 2000 Guineas, a decision taken by connections because of prevailing health issues. He has since been going well in the mornings, suggesting that he is fit and proper for the St Leger. If that is so, then We Jammin has to be given every chance of re-establishing his already well-known quality. The change of rider from the regular Omar Walker to Reyan Lewis should not be a problem.

Verdict: This is redemption time for We Jammin.

9 – STRONG AVEENU

  • Pedigree: Bay colt (March 19) by Aveenu Malcainu out of Ruby Rose
  • Trainer: Patrick Lynch
  • Jockey: Robert Halledeen

Ran a brave race in the 2000 Guineas, finishing just a length behind winner Salute The Don and second-place Stardom. Strong Aveenu is coming to hand at the right time.

Verdict: A live contender with the only issue being his ability to genuinely get 10 furlongs.

10 – STARDOM

  • Pedigree: Bay colt (April 4) by Sensational Slam out of Trinket Box
  • Trainer: Gary Subratie
  • Jockey: Dane Dawkins

After the 2000 Guineas, many pundits were of the opinion that Stardom came too late. With the extension of two furlongs in the St Leger, that occurrence repeating is highly unlikely to repeat. He has been going well in the mornings and is primed for this one. Based on his previous five starts, Stardom will be in mid-pack for most of the race, with his finish playing a significant role in the final outcome. His pedigree, being a full brother to the talented Calculus, is another tick in the winning box.

Verdict: The one they all have to beat; heavily favoured to take the second leg.

11 – THE MAESTRO

  • Pedigree: Bay colt (February 22) by Bern Identity out of Moonlight Brew
  • Trainer: Peter-John Parsard
  • Jockey: Shane Richardson

Lacks consistency and the necessary class depth required for Classic success.

Verdict: With only one win from four starts, it is difficult to see The Maestro winning his second race in the St Leger.

12 – LONDON SPIRIT

  • Pedigree: Bay colt (February 6) by Bern Identity out of Blufield
  • Trainer: Jason DaCosta
  • Jockey: Shaheem Gordon
  • Equipment Change: Figure 8 off

Form has been patchy and faces a steep uphill task in this field.

Verdict: Very hard to recommend even with the equipment change.

13 – MOHANLAL

  • Pedigree: Bay colt (April 7) by Casual Trick out of Raise Your Voice
  • Trainer: Richard Azan
  • Jockey: Bebeto Harvey

From his six starts, Mohanlal has hit the board on four occasions.

Verdict: The best expected is a place in the exotics.
