KINGSTON, Jamaica - Following Money Monster’s gate-to-wire win in the Alsafra Trophy feature at a mile on Saturday (June 11), breeder, owner and trainer Fitzroy Glispie believes his bay gelding could go on to better things.
Ridden by Reyan Lewis, Money Monster won the three-year-old and upwards Overnight Allowance contest with a dominating win by 2½ lengths in a time of 1:38.4. Awesome Treasure was second and Miniature Man third.
Money Monster was hustled up to take the early lead at the off, and the five-year-old bay gelding held on at the front end ahead of Awesome Treasure (Dane Dawkins) and Miniature Man (Anthony Thomas).
Still under a snug wrap, Money Monster continued to lead runners down the backstretch before he was strongly challenged by Awesome Treasure and Miniature Man while navigating the half-mile turn.
Turning for home still with the advantage, Money Monster responded positively to the urgings of Lewis and Money Monster kept his gallop well, to register his first win for the season from six starts.
“Well, he [Money Monster] has always had his problems but today (Saturday) he was feeling good because we got a two-month break. He came back and ran dismally the first time off the break and then ran a creditable race the last time a week ago. And we figured, he was ready again. He is feeling okay and he came and won.
“The performance was excellent. This was really a weak field and we just decided that we were going out in front and making every post a winning one,” Glispie said.
“Well, I can’t say what’s next for him. Maybe when we go home, he is not feeling well and so we can’t make any future plans as yet,” he added.
