KINGSTON, Jamaica – The eighth race on the card of Tuesday, May  23, 2023, is the Labour Day Trophy, an Overnight Allowance call going seven furlongs.

Among the nine entries is the reigning Horse of the Year Atomica. In this her second start in 2023, Atomica faces a moderate field of rivals, plus she enters this Overnight event the beneficiary of what can only be termed totally miscued conditions.

Atomica is coming down in grade, having already been a serial winner of Grade One races, including the top ranked Jamaica Cup against older and more seasoned horses.

In her only start this season, Atomica was way below her best, finishing 13th and last behind winner, I Am Fred.

On Labour Day, Atomica drops down to Overnight, which is her right, yet she is receiving weight (five pounds) from her perpetual beating stick, Perfect Brew, who has never ever gotten close to winning a Grade One race.

Then there is Prince Marshall, who has a solitary victory in Overnight, achieved in December of last year, and who  is racing in the class for the second time this year.

Like Atomica, Prince Marshall’s lone effort in Overnight in 2023, was forgettable, a tenth place finish, 35 lengths behind Blue Vinyl, 24 days ago.

The promoting company, in the view of The Quick Galloper, has to amend the conditions where applicable for horses coming down in grade, or better still,  handicap all races from the Overnight level, and upwards.

The 2023 Labour Day Trophy is a cinch for Atomica, unless something goes awfully wrong, and even if she loses, which is highly improbable, that does not make the conditions right and fair for all.

Having decided that Atomica is the winner, probably the best option available for punters is the exacta or quinella wagers.

The Quick Galloper prefers a quinella box wager, with Atomica, Perfect Brew and Sweet Majesty.

Good Luck To All!

  1. the old handicapping system is what kept racing what it was since 1959 at caymanas.you win you get 7lbs.you lose and youre 3lbs lighter.its the better antidote for our racing, lets hope it is reinstated soon.competitive cards is needed now before it gets worse
