COTTERWOOD KATHY IS A WINNER AFTER 13 STARTS
Cotterwood Kathy, after finishing second to March and Shoot over 6 furlongs (1,200m) on September 25, returned and went better in a native-bred three-year-old maiden condition race over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m).
Trained by a rejuvenated Ryan Darby and ridden by Oneil Mullings, Cotterwood Kathy broke well and went straight to the front and held the lead ahead of Babylon Will Fall (Youville Pinnock), Lady Ben (Linton Steadman) and Dancing With A Cat (Dane Dawkins) going into the half-mile (800m).
Turning for home, Cotterwood Kathy turned on the pressure and powered her way home, winning by five lengths in a time of 1:08.2. Ooh So Long (Andre Powell) came on strong towards the end on the inside rails to get second place ahead of Lady Ben in the third spot.
TURNING ON THE LIGHT
Trained by Dennis Pryce, Turnonthelight switched on to win a native-bred four-year-old and upwards (non-winners of three) contest going one mile (1,600m).
Turnonthelight wasn’t able to go with the early leaders as jockey Javaniel Patterson held the bay filly off the pace down the backstretch. Fake (Reyan Lewis) led the field ahead of Silver Fox (Andre Powell) and Wright In Flight (Ramon Nepare).
Turnonthelight came into view navigating the half-mile turn when she slipped down into fourth place looking for a clear path to run at the leaders. Turning for home and going four wide off, Turonthelight produced a late run to get the better of Tocatbetheglory (Dick Cardenas) by a head.
Charmin Beauty, the mount of Dane Dawkins, was a length and three-quarters adrift in third place. The final time for the event was recorded at 1:42.4.
OMAR WALKER BRINGS HOME ZABRATONE
Zabratone, from the barn of Dennis Thwaites, easily won a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claiming ($550,000-$450,000) spread at 7 furlongs (1,400m).
Zabratone was off to a good start as jockey Omar Walker held the five-year-old chestnut gelding in second place behind Jamai Raja, who recovered well from a poor start to lead the field down the backstretch. Going into the half-mile turn, Zabratone took over proceedings and began to open up on rivals approaching the distance.
Cruising while entering the lane, Zabratone wasted no time and sprinted home to score by 8 lengths ahead of Berning Red (Jemar Jackson) and Above Hall Links (Anthony Thomas). The final time for the race was 1:28.2.
TRAINER DELROY SPENCER FIRST WINNER IN 2022
Trainer Delroy Spencer notched his first winner for the season when his charge Diligent won a three-year-and upwards Optional Claiming ($250,000-$200,000) contest racing down the straight (1,000m) course.
Ridden by Robert Halledeen, Diligent laboured among the backmarkers in the early part of the race as Stanislaus (Romario Spencer ) led the field ahead of Breaking Storm (Anthony Thomas), Blu Attitude (Dane Dawkins) and Sly Stalloon (Matthew Bennett).
Crossing the dummy rails and onto the main track, Breaking Storm came up to challenge Stanislaus for the lead, with both holding a significant advantage over the rest of the pack.
Then Halledeen brought Diligent from out of the clouds inside the final half-furlong (100m) to get up in the nick of time for the win.
Diligent won by half-length ahead of Breaking Storm and Stanislaus in a time of 1:02.0.
SEVEN HORSES CLAIMED
Henry Harrison Jr claimed Anngelos for Owner Winston Taylor for $550,000 from Jason DaCosta, and Gregory Forsyth claimed Nala’s Bushman for owner Meleta Byfield also for $550,000 from Junior Small from the fifth race.
In the sixth race, Donovan Plummer claimed Breaking Storm for owner K & R Syndicate from Ryan Williams, Steadman Curtis claimed Cup Cake for owner Somora Clarke from Ryan Darby, Welsh Soutar claimed Diligent for owner Delroy Wellington from Delroy Spencer, Fernando Geddes claimed Blu Attitude for owner Garfield Hemley from Byron Davis, and Ryan Williams claimed Stanislaus for owner Robert Williams from Dale Murphy. All horses in the sixth event were claimed for $250,000 each.
