Darwin’s resurgence could not have come at a better moment.

After a lacklustre tenth in the Prince Consort Stakes and two subsequent fifth-place finishes at the three-year-old non-two level, he returned with renewed purpose in the Mr Lover Lover Trophy.

Contested on Saturday, June 20, 2026, over nine furlongs and 25 yards, Darwin sported the tongue tie and delivered a performance that stamped his credentials ahead of the Jamaica St Leger. With Tajay Suckoo guiding him for trainer Richard Azan, Darwin registered his second career win from eight starts, hugging the inside rails to conserve energy and maximize efficiency.

Suckoo’s patience and tactical awareness were evident as he tracked the duel between Jo Boxer (Jaheim Anderson) and God’s Plan (Emelio McLean) up front. Approaching the half-mile, Darwin was nudged forward while still saving ground, and by the time three furlongs remained, Suckoo unleashed his mount.

Darwin surged past rivals with authority, leaving the contest settled long before the wire. He powered away to score by a commanding 14 ½ lengths in 1:55.2, with splits of 24.4, 48.1, 1:12.4, and 1:39.3. Jo Boxer held second, with God’s Plan finishing third.

This emphatic victory signalled Darwin’s growing maturity and readiness for classic company. Few of his contemporaries have proven themselves over two turns, giving him a distinct edge as the St Leger looms and the Derby approaches. His latest triumph was more than just a win, it was a declaration that Darwin is evolving into a serious contender at the right time.

The coming weeks will determine whether this breakthrough marks the start of his rise among Jamaica’s three-year-old elite.
