KINGSTON, Jamaica – Maya benefitting from a well-timed ride by jockey Dick Cardenas set the cats among the pigeons to take the Caymanas Saturday fifth at odds of 16-1. That event was a four-year-old and upwards (non-winners of two) call going the two turns of nine furlongs and 25 yards.
Maya trained by Dennis Thwaites, raced at the back of the 10-horse field from the start, and down the backstretch, as Hijo Primero (Javaniel Patterson) ridden and King Antholew (Chris Mamdeen) were locked in a duel for the lead. Even at this stage of the contest, Maya was still racing at the back.
King Antholew entered the straight with a clear advantage with Maya and Cardenas weaving their way through the pack eventually reaching the inside rails where the bay filly found her best stride to power away from rivals winning by 2 ½ lengths.
King Antholew held for second with a tired Another Champion (Anthony Thomas) third.
