KINGSTON, Jamaica – On the Guineas weekend (June 4-5), owner, administrator, and breeder Howard Hamilton was honoured for his contribution to the racing industry.
The first running of the trophy race honouring Hamilton was the eighth event on Sunday, June 5, and was contested by three-year-old maidens travelling the distance of nine furlongs and 25 yards.
Twelve horses faced the starter in this two-turn event with the odds-on 4-5 favourite, I Realise trained by Al Brown with Anthony Thomas in the saddle showing his intentions early by going to the front while rounding the first turn.
Down the backstretch, it was still I Realise with She’s My Friend (Reyan Lewis) and Great Wayne (Abigail Able) providing the early resistance. Then after leaving the four-furlong marker, Thomas asked I Realise to stretch his lead and that the gelding did without any fuss.
In the lane for the last two furlongs, it was all I Realise, who went on to win by 7 ½ lengths in a final time of 1:59.1.
D Head Cornerstone (Dane Dawkins) ran on for second with Secret Emperor (Bebeto Harvey) third.
I Realise was the second winner on the day for Thomas.
