KINGSTON, Jamaica – Five-year-old bay horse Laban was rewarded for his consistency with a narrow victory over the five straight course on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at Caymanas Park.
With the hot and now Classic winning jockey Dane Dawkins in the saddle for trainer Richard Azan, Laban raced prominently in the Overnight Allowance call as speedsters Lightning McQueen (Paul Francis) and Capturemyship (Andre Powell) blazed searing early splits of 22.2 seconds.
Dawkins gradually moved Laban into contention when they hit the main track with two furlongs left in the contest, taking full control of proceedings with a furlong to go.
Then out of the pack surged Rojorn Di Pilot (Reyan Lewis), and in a dogged fight to the line, Laban scraped home by a nose. Secret Identity (Matthew Bennett) finished third. The winning time was clocked at 58.4 seconds.
For Azan it was his second winner on the day having scored earlier on the day with Artesia. While, for Laban it was his seventh career victory from 30 starts. Laban now has lifetime earnings of over $6 million.
