KINGSTON, Jamaica - The 18th running of the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Trophy (Grade II) takes centre stage on Emancipation Day (Monday, August 1) and will see the top-rated horse at this time, Mahogany taking on six runners for top honour in the three-year-old and upwards Open Allowance contest over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m).
The seven runners are featured below.
  1. MAHOGANY: (5 by g by Sensational Slam – Mete-Orite) – Confirmed his status as the top-rated horse in training after his impressive win in the inaugural staging of the Clovis Metcalfe Cup over 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m) on July 2. Mahogany led from start to finish in a dominating 10-½ length victory in a time of 1:30.2 beating last year’s Jamaica St Leger and Derby winner Calculus as well as current Horse of the Year Further and Beyond. The talented Mahogany should enjoy this trip and given his speed; this race could be a walk in the park for him despite allowing weight to his six rivals.
  1. SHE’S A WONDER: (4 b f by Bern Identity – Jamaican Dream) – Made her seasonal debut on June 18 over 6 ½ furlongs and finished fifth behind stablemate Jordon Reign’s and Lure of Lucy. She’s A Wonder has been nominated to race on Saturday in an Overnight Allowance over 7 ½ furlongs, with the strong possibility of her not facing the starter. We have to wait and see what happens. Start or not, She’s A Wonder has no chance against her illustrious stablemate, Mahogany.
  1. LURE OF LUCY (USA): (4 b f by Uncle Lino – Ring of Faith) – Finished second behind Jordon Reign’s in the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame Stakes Trophy at the Open Allowance/Graded Stakes over 6 furlongs on July 16. Lure of Lucy has speed and will more than likely try to lead but that is a daunting task with Mahogany around.
  1. GOD OF LOVE: (6 b g by Adore The Gold – Shand D) – Consistent runner with the hope of a minor placing.
  1. CURLIN’S AFFAIR: (4 ch c by Perfect Curlin – Nuclear Affair) – Won well on last in an Overnight Allowance race last Saturday over five furlongs round. Curlin’s Affair steps up here to compete meeting Mahogany which doesn’t give him much of a chance.
  1. BIG JULE: (4 b c by Tapizar – Blues in the Grass) – Big Jule is a late non-starter.
  1. LABAN: (5 g h by Sensational Slam – For Trixie) – Good sort who is in a very tough spot. Laban, however, will be fighting hard in the final two furlongs for a place on the board.
