KINGSTON, Jamaica – Guided by the winning hands of jockey Dane Dawkins, three-year-old chestnut gelding Berning Red (Bern Identity – Feasibility Study) produced his best run to date, as he seeks a possible start in the July 2, Jamaica St Leger.
The latest effort by Berning Red came in the Caymanas Sunday (June 19) second – a three and four-year-old and upwards (non-winners of four) for locally bred horses and a (non-winners of three) for importees at seven furlongs.
Having been placed in high claiming on April 19, and not taken, Berning Red trained by Ian Parsard, returned to his class grouping to add another third tick in the win column from five starts.
This event was affected by the late withdrawals of the odds-on morning-line favourite Madelyn’s Sunshine and Hijo Primero.
Foreigner Luksol (Reyan Lewis) went to the lead closely watched by Emperorofthecats (Bebeto Harvey), as Dawkins chose to keep Berning Red in check close to the back of the five-horse field.
Emperorofthecats disposed of Luksol, to enter the straight the clear leader as Dawkins started to increase the tempo on Berning Red, who responded with quick acceleration, going away to win by 1 ¼ lengths. Emperorofthecats was second and Outbidder (Omar Walker) third.
For Dawkins, it was his fifth win in 13 races run thus far over this weekend.
