Three from three for the filly

KINGSTON, Jamaica – In a devastating show of thoroughbred class, Atomica vaulted herself to the favourite’s spot for the Classic 1000 Guineas with an explosive victory in the Thornbird Stakes (fillies only) – one of the major prep races for the three-year-old Classics. The Thornbird was run over seven furlongs.
Atomica, a chestnut filly by Nuclear Wayne out of Honkeytonkville trained by Gary Subratie and ridden Dane Dawkins came out of her starting barrier behind some of her closest rivals. Unperturbed, Dawkins kept Atomica going and was not far from eventual leader Prncsshootingstar (Shane Ellis), with champion two-year-old Golden Wattle close-by.
That order remained the same entering the straight, but that was when the explosion took place. Atomica, as if possessed, went by Prncsshootingstar without a murmur and then blasted away from the rest, swerving a bit to the right to show her greenness, to win by an absurd 7 ¼ lengths in a time of 1:27.0.
Golden Wattle was second and Silent Mission third.
Atomica was winning her third race from three starts and was the second winner on the day for both Subratie and Dawkins.
