KINGSTON, Jamaica – Prior to the start of the sixth race on Saturday, June 25, 2022, rain gushed down delaying the start of the event.
From the time the first drop fell, racegoers at Caymanas Park were already checking their programmes in search of grey horses to wager on. Why? It has become the norm in local racing to expect horses of the grey persuasion to be more competitive in the slop of the underfoot conditions.
The grey horses did deliver on the day.
In the sixth, Diligent, a nine-year-old grey gelding starting at 5-1, ran on to earn jockey Phillip Parchment and trainer Gary Griffiths a visit to the winners’ enclosure.
In the eighth, five-year-old grey mare SheBoom, a chance ride for Dane Dawkins won at odds of 4-1 for trainer Patrick Lynch. To consolidate the power of the greys on a wet track, finishing second behind SheBoom was 2-1 chance Lord Ajahlon, a five-year-old grey gelding. The SheBoom – Lord Ajahlon exacta returned $1,856.
The icing on the ‘grey’ cake came in the ninth, the Graded Stakes feature. Duke, a five-year-old grey horse won in commanding style at 5 ½ furlongs.
So, when there is rain at the Park, seek the grey horses as wagering possibilities.
