KINGSTON, Jamaica – After problems in the gates in his last outing, which hampered his performance, four-year-old foreigner I Am Fred returned on Saturday, June 4, in a dominant mood to a fighting victory in the Open Allowance | Graded Stakes call run for the Distinctly Irish Trophy over nine furlongs and 25 yards.
With Reyan Lewis replacing regular rider Phillip Parchment, the Jason DaCosta trainee raced behind stablemate Billy Whizz (Anthony Thomas), with King Arthur (Omar Walker) and Calculus (Romario Spencer) following. The others in the contest I’ve Got Magic, Hover Craft, and Crimson way behind.
The running order remained the same down the backstretch with Billy Whizz increasing his lead. Rounding the turn, I’m Fred got closer with Calculus also on the move.
I Am Fred then got ahead to enter the top of the straight with the advantage as Calculus hovered on the outside, and Billy Whizz was not done yet. Billy Whizz rallied in the final furlongs but I Am Fred and Lewis dug deep to come out the winners by 1 ½ lengths. Calculus finished third.
The winning time was a fast 1:54.1. For I Am Fred it was his sixth win from 13 starts, with his earnings now close to $4 million.
