Spectators at Caymanas Park witnessed a demolition job in the Valbert Marlowe Memorial Cup on Saturday, June 13, 2026. Four‑year‑old American‑bred bay gelding Diesel Train turned the nine‑furlong (1,800m) contest into a one‑horse exhibition, storming away by 16 lengths in a time of 1:52.0 (24.3 x 47.3 x 1:12.0 x 1:38.2).
The race, a Restricted Allowance III for native‑bred four‑year‑olds and older (non‑winners of four) and imported four‑year‑olds and older (non‑winners of three), was expected to be competitive. Instead, it became a showcase of raw power.
With Brahma Bull (Tajay Suckoo) carving out the early fractions, Star Quest (Robert Halledeen) and Prince Roy (Tyrese Anderson) gave chase. Jockey Raddesh Roman kept Diesel Train tucked away, biding his time.
At six furlongs, Diesel Train crept into contention. By the five‑furlong pole, Roman pressed the accelerator. The gelding surged past the leaders, widened around the half‑mile turn, and left the rest floundering. Thousand Treasure (Dane Dawkins) and Slam Sharpe (Richie Shakes) could only trail in his wake.
Only afterwards did trainer Peter‑John Parsard reveal the doubts he carried. “He (Diesel Train) had a couple of issues we sorted out. Coming off a layoff and going long, I wasn’t sure how he would handle it,” he said.
Parsard explained his minimal instructions to Roman: “You’re the favourite, expect pressure, ride smart, and save something for the stretch.” Roman did exactly that.
Diesel Train now steps into Overnight Allowance company, a level Parsard views as the gateway to the elite. “Once you’re in Overnight, you’re one win away from Grade One. If he keeps progressing, who knows how far he can go,” the trainer said.
