KINGSTON, Jamaica – In his 16th career start and fifth for the 2025 season, Captain Sparrow notched his fourth victory, securing a coveted berth in the Overnight Allowance division. The four-year-old bay colt, sired by Savoy Stomp out of Rackham’s Mistress, is trained by Anthony Nunes and piloted by jockey Raddesh Roman.

That triumphant run came on Saturday, July 19, in a mile-long contest for four-year-olds and upward who had not previously won four races. Though typically known for storming from behind, Captain Sparrow shocked spectators and commentators alike by darting to the front as the gates flung open. The surprise move drew a lively reaction from the track announcer: “Unexpectedly, Captain Sparrow has been put thorough to get that lead at the seven.”

At the six-furlong pole, Roman eased Captain Sparrow back to second, three lengths off the pacesetting Mack And Rome. As the field turned for home, Mack And Rome maintained the lead, but Captain Sparrow surged on the outside. With just a furlong remaining, he reclaimed the top spot and dug deep to fend off Brenda Boy’s relentless late bid. The finish was tight, but Captain Sparrow prevailed by a neck in a time of 1:42.3.

Trainer Anthony Nunes credited strategic adjustments for the win: “We had to try something different in this one. Mack And Rome was a potential lone speed, that was why Captain Sparrow was vigorously warmed up by Raddesh (Roman). He (Captain Sparrow) did as plan, and made it to the winning post as the winner,” Nunes told Quickgallopja.com.
