KINGSTON, Jamaica – Showing his obvious likeness for the longer distances, Calculus, a three-year-old bay colt by Sensational Slam – Trinket Box turn back his more accomplished peers to win the 2021 Classic Jamaica St Leger at 10-furlongs which was the Caymanas Saturday ninth.

Wearing the figure eight and with Shane Ellis in the saddle, Calculus trained by Gary Subratie was winning for the third time from eight starts.

This was Ellis’ fifth victory in the St Leger and the second in succession for Subratie who won last year with Nipster.

The 2021 St Leger got off to a rocky start as Prince Marshall railed-up in gate number one eventually sliding under and was declared a late non-starter. At this time several horses were removed from their starting stalls while others were not allowed to do so.

When the race got underway, it was Miniature Man (Dick Cardenas) who surprisingly went to the lead.

Miniature Man kept the lead in the early part of the back stretch but was being continuously harassed by Simba The Lion ((Aaron Chatrie) and Further and Beyond (Dane Nelson). The top filly in the race She’s A Wonder was close to the back with Calculus.

Ellis made his move with 6 ½ furlongs left in this Classic encounter going down on the inside rails to be with the two leaders Miniature Man and Further and Beyond.

Miniature Man then hit reverse as Nelson pushed Further and Beyond ahead of the rest closely followed by Calculus. She’s A Wonder was also creeped down to be in contention.

In the last two furlongs it was all Calculus who pulled away from Further and Beyond winning by 6 ¾ lengths in a time of 2:08.

She’s A Wonder was third.

  1. Very important point made in this article "several horses removed from the gates ..while others were not ...." When will these people do better. Taking nothing away from the winner, congratulations due to all concerned, how did Minature Man became so upset ,it was evident before the race he would not be winning this 10 furlong race.

    1. Thanks for your comments - The Quick Galloper did notice the fractious behaviour by Miniature Man before the start of the race. Yet, Calculus showed his love for the longer distances.
