KINGSTON, Jamaica - The Jamaica 2000 Guineas, a native-bred three-year-old Futurity race for colts and geldings over one mile (1,600m) is set for tomorrow, Sunday, June 5, 2022, at Caymanas Park.
Twelve runners will participate in the Grade One event which will see the pre-race main contenders Blue Vinyl, Emperorofthecats, Perfect Brew, and Power locking horns in this Classic showdown.
Interestingly, current leading trainer Jason DaCosta has no entry in the race, which he won last year with Miniature Man. Gary Subratie, third in the trainers’ championship is also without an entry.
Top Classic jockey Shane Ellis surprisingly does not have a mount in the 2000.
Below is the analysis of the 12 starters in the 2022 – 2000 Guineas.
  1. BLUE VINYL: (3 ch c by Bern Identity – Blufield) – Won the major prep trail for the 2000, The Kingston (7 ½ furlongs), by a convincing 3 ½ lengths in a new Stakes record time of 1:32.4, which speaks volumes of his talent. Blue Vinyl has already defeated most of his rivals with the extra distance much to his liking. He is at a weight disadvantage in the handicaps against one of his main rivals Emperorofthecats but at the three-year-old level with growth and progression coming in quick spurts, this is not always a major issue. The only issue for Blue Vinyl is breaking from the number one draw, but his rider Raddesh Roman is known for getting his rides quickly on the front end.
  1. KP CHOICE: (3 b c by Nasheet – Drop Them) – Difficult to see KP Choice winning this Classic. He will learn from the experience.
  1. RUM PUNCHER: (3 ch g by Soul Warrior – Miss Angeline) – A winner 14 days ago who will not repeat.
  1. EMPEROROFTHECATS: (3 b g by Emperor Hall – Laws of the Cat) – Emperorofthecats was expected to be more competitive in The Kingston where he finished fourth. Then Emperorofthecats allowed weight to all his rivals which is not the case on Sunday, as all runners start with the same impost. Emperorofthecats has trained on nicely since The Kingston, yet there are doubts about his ability to effectively get a mile. A fit and well-prepared Emperorofthecats will not fall short of the targeted distance.
  1. BRINKS: (3 b g by Bern Identity – Indian Bluff) – Has not lived up to early expectations and only a major revival will see him winning. Note, Brinks races with the cheekpieces on.
  1. NOMOREDEALS: (3 ch c by Soul Warrior – Thornhill Miss) – Finished second behind Morimoto over 7 furlongs (1,400m) on May 22. Nomoredeals faces Morimoto again along with the best colts and geldings which makes his chances of winning slim. Has a good chance of hitting the board.
  1. THE CITADEL: (3 ch g by Key To Power – Wings of Hope) – Had his winning streak broken when finishing eighth in The Kingston. That pale effort will be difficult for The Citadel to overturn.
  1. UNRULY DUDE: (3 b c by Bern Identity – Wonder Girl) – Made a winning debut over 5 ½ furlongs on May 13, 2022. Then, Unruly Dude made one move to win by 4 ¾ lengths in a time of 1:07.1. Although, Unruly Dude has the distinction of being the only unbeaten horse in the line-up, but winning this Classic is not possible.
  1. POWER: (3 ch c by Bal A Bali – Swift Fox) – Failed to fire in The Kingston, finishing in seventh place. Before that, Power was a winner over this distance by 3 ¾ lengths in the Simply Magic Cup in a time of 1:40.3. If Power puts in an improved effort, he has the possibility of playing a significant role in the outcome.
  1. MORIMOTO: (3 b c by Casual Trick – Luckybegood) - Romped home to his second-consecutive win over seven furlongs in the Monday Morning Trophy on May 22. Morimoto won convincingly by three lengths ahead of Nomoredeals in a time of 1:27.4. Morimoto is improving at the right time, has a favourable draw, and with his fitness not in question, has a loud shout.
  1. PERFECT BREW: (3 b g by Bern Identity – Moonlight Brew) – Came home 3 ½ lengths in second place behind Blue Vinyl in The Kingston. Perfect Brew should welcome this extension in journey, and given his running style, can turn the tables on Blue Vinyl and beat the rest of the field as well.
  1. YELLOWSTONE: (3 ch g by Sensational Slam – Awry) – Should not trouble the main contenders. Will use his speed in the early part of the race.
