KINGSTON, Jamaica – The eighth race on Monday, May 22, 2023, is for three-year-old maiden horses travelling five furlongs straight.

Eleven horses are entered in this contest, which is expected to be a close affair.

The Quick Galloper’s assessment is published below.

1 – VELIKI VICKI is a roan filly (February 19) by Bold Conquest out of Sweetyourock, trained by Rowan Mathie with Anthony Thomas aboard. Nothing to show from her five outings to date. That trend is going to continue.

2 – CAPTAIN CALICO is a chestnut colt (April 17) by Soul Warrior out of Rackham’s Mistress, trained by Anthony Nunes with Linton Steadman aboard. Was nominated to make his debut two weeks ago, but that did not happen as the race was abandoned. Captain Calico is said to have ability, with a good first run on the cards.

3 – SKYRIZI is a chestnut colt (April 1) by Tapilu out of Who’s Bossy, trained by Donovan Plummer with Andree Powell in the saddle. This debutante will learn.

4 – SHE’S A MIRAGE is a bay filly (March 29) by Casual Trick out of Full Moon’s Enough, trained by Jason DaCosta with Anthony Allen aboard. The experienced one in this event has raced 11 times. Has no realistic chance of winning.

5 – COSMIC FORCE is a bay colt (April 7) by Savoy Stomp out of Kipling Weekend, trained by Philip Feanny with Romario Spencer aboard. Has been consistent of late but does not have enough to be a factor.

6 – BLINKIN LIGHT is a bay colt (April 12) by Patton Proud out of Storm Girl, trained by Gary Griffiths with Oshane Nugent in the saddle. Note, Blinkin Light races with the blinkers on, and the figure 8 off. Trainer Griffiths has made the equipment changes on Blinkin Light. This colt is slowly getting on, and with the opposition of no major significance, will have a deciding voice.

7 – SHIP AHOY is a chestnut colt (January 16) by Soul Warrior out of Ship Sham, trained by Anthony Nunes with Tevin Foster aboard. Another newcomer from the barn of trainer Nunes. Ship Ahoy enters his racing career with several nods from the morning watchers. Don’t be surprised if this ‘Ship’ anchors in the winners’ enclosure.

8 – PHENOMENAL ONE is a chestnut colt (March 31) by Lion Tamer out of Darlin, trained by Jason DaCosta with Reyan Lewis aboard. After six starts, Phenomenal One is still trying to find himself. Phenomenal One comes down the five-straight chute for the first time, with several exercise efforts directed at the distance. He now has an opportunity to leave the confines of his maiden life.

9 – ANSWER MY PRAYERS is a bay filly (May 24) by Casual Trick out of Great Faith, trained by Gary Subratie with Raddesh Roman in the saddle. Getting there, and has at least one good run down the straight route. Has an outsider’s chance of winning this one.

10 – LITTLE MISS NISHA is a chestnut filly (April 19) by Traditional out of Simply Classic, trained by Winston Morris with Omar Simpson in the saddle. Note, Little Miss Nisha races with the blinkers off, and the visor on. Still learning.

11 – KEM is a chestnut colt (June 29) by Here Comes Ben out of Lost Springs, trained by Paul Swaby with Calvin Bailey aboard. Did well on his first run, when finished sixth (6 ½ lengths) behind the winner. He will get there but not on Monday.
