The Jamaican racing fraternity is today mourning the passing of longtime owner and breeder, Edmund Thomas, affectionately known as 'Big Ed', who left us this morning, May 12, 2026, at the age of 77.
Thomas’s love affair with racing began in the 1970s, and his name will forever be etched in history as the proud owner of War Zone, the brilliant colt who captured the 1996 Triple Crown under the guidance of the late Wayne DaCosta. His colours were also carried to victory by horses such as Life Is Just For Living, Mr Skill, and the Grade 1 winner Fluffy.
Beyond racing, Thomas was a visionary entrepreneur, founding General Paintings Limited on Molynes Road in Kingston. The company continues to thrive today under the stewardship of his son Robert.
Robert, who followed in his father’s footsteps as an owner, celebrated success as recently as May 9, 2026, when Pepper Stepper, trained by Jason DaCosta, achieved his maiden success.
Edmund Thomas was more than an owner; he was a stalwart of the industry, a man whose presence enriched the sport. He is survived by his wife, Ann-Marie, daughters Gail and Simone, and son Robert.
The Quick Galloper's team extends its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends. The racing community has lost a giant, but his spirit will live on in every stride taken on the track.
Sleep well, Sir Ed! Your legacy gallops on.
