Super David made his racing debut on April 26, finishing third over four furlongs, just 1 ½ lengths behind Wall To Wall and Nebraska. Six days later, he returned to secure his first victory in a maiden three-year-old event at 6 ½ furlongs.

What caught the eye was the commanding nature of that win. Super David, bred from Patton Proud out of Storm Girl, was ridden by Robert Halledeen and trained by David Powell.

As soon as the gates opened, Halledeen sent him straight to the front, and from there it was a one-horse show. The speedy gelding kept stretching away from his rivals, crossing the line 10 ½ lengths clear in a sharp time of 1:20.2.

Trainer Powell admitted even he was taken aback:

“I expected Super David to run a good race with a good chance of winning, but the way he ran, the way he dominated was revealing.”

Explaining why the gelding only began his career at three, Powell added:

“As a trainer, I don’t like to race my horses at two, I prefer to wait until they actually reach the full age of three. Super David was foaled on April 16, plus he had an injury, and it was then, I decided to geld him.”

Following his emphatic maiden success, speculation quickly turned to what’s next for Super David. Powell clarified the immediate plan:

“He (Super David) will not run in The Kingston on May 9, it is too early after his win on May 2. Instead, Super David will probably get an outing prior to the 2000 Guineas in June.”
