Nautical Star Difficult To Deny In Overnight Call

The feature event on the eight-race card of Saturday, January 17, 2026, is the annual renewal of the St Catherine Cup.

This prestigious sprint is open to three-year-old and up horses at the Overnight Allowance level, and has attracted a competitive field of thirteen nominees.

The contest will be run over six furlongs with The Quick Galloper’s analysis of the possible outcome is shared with readers in post-position order.

1 – DIVINE FORCE

Once a winner at this level in May 2025, Divine Force has struggled to regain that spark. His preference lies over longer trips, and the cutback to six furlongs is unlikely to suit. Unless the pace collapses dramatically, Divine Force will find this assignment beyond him.

2 – INSPIRE FORCE

Returned from a lengthy layoff in September 2025 but has yet to rediscover his old form. The addition of the tongue tie has not reversed his fortunes, and his recent efforts suggest another below-par run is likely.

3 – NAUTICAL STAR

The imported colt was well-fancied in the Mouttet Mile, but failed to fire, finishing ninth. Dropping into Overnight Allowance company represents a significant class relief. His morning gallops indicate he has settled into local conditions, and if he reproduces even a fraction of his overseas ability, Nautical Star should dominate. This looks like a golden opportunity to stamp his authority.

4 – TAURUS BOY

Steps back into Overnight Allowance after campaigning in the claiming ranks. On exposed form, Taurus Boy is outclassed and will struggle to make an impression.

5 – CHAMPION BUBBLER

Best known for her straight-course exploits, Champion Bubbler was a non-factor in the Mouttet Mile. Back at a more suitable level, she could sneak into the minor placings if things fall her way. A useful option for exotic wagers, but unlikely to threaten the principals.

6 – ORO ORO

Scored his first local win on January 3, showing promise. However, this represents a sharp rise in class, and the addition of blinkers may not be enough to bridge the gap. Oro Oro is still learning the ropes on the local track and may need more seasoning before striking at this level.

7 – GALOPIN DE VELOZ

Has progressed admirably through his conditions to reach Overnight Allowance. The visor comes off for this test. While talented, this represents a new challenge against hardened rivals, and he may need more time to fully establish himself.

8 – SENSATIONAL SOUL

Effective against his age-group peers, but this step into seasoned company is a bridge too far. Sensational Soul is best watched for future engagements.

9 – WALL STREET TRADER

Ran a respectable fifth in the Miracle Cup on New Year’s Day, finishing behind Girvano and Of A Revolution. Six furlongs is his ideal trip, and his tactical speed makes him a genuine threat. Wall Street Trader could be the one to push Nautical Star hardest, especially if he breaks sharply and secures a good position.

10 – OIL MACHINE

A consistent performer knocking at the Overnight door. Six furlongs is right in his wheelhouse, and with the visor removed, Oil Machine may run more freely. He is a strong contender and should be respected in all calculations.

11 – MAJOR DANGER

A familiar face at this level, Major Danger has been consistent without breaking through. His honest efforts suggest he will run his race, but a win looks unlikely.

12 – MARK MY IDENTITY

One of the standout three-year-olds of 2025, winning four races before stepping into Overnight company in December, where he finished third. Six furlongs may be on the sharp side for him, but if the pace is hot early, his stamina could carry him into the frame late. A horse to keep onside for longer trips.

13 – COMMANDER Z

Prefers the straight course, where his best efforts have been recorded. Still, his class and talent mean he cannot be dismissed entirely. Commander Z could sneak into the placings if conditions suit.

THE QUICK GALLOPER'S VERDICT

The 2026 St Catherine Cup revolves around Nautical Star, who finds himself in much calmer waters after tackling the Mouttet Mile. His class edge, coupled with encouraging morning preparation, makes him the horse to beat.

Wall Street Trader and Oil Machine are the most credible challengers, both well-suited to six furlongs and capable of capitalising if Nautical Star underperforms. Mark My Identity may find the trip short but could run on late to secure a minor share.
