Gelroy stunned punters in Saturday’s (January 10, 2026) sixth of ten races, storming home at odds of 11-1 to secure a decisive victory. But for trainer Cashbert Khwalsingh, the result was no surprise.
“When I assessed the handicaps of the race, the only horse that I feared was Pope’s Lady, but Pope’s Lady was coming off a long break, so her readiness to compete was unknown. I was better off in the weights when compared with Radam, who was one of the main contenders. So, I thought that going five furlongs straight would be good for Gelroy. That is a distance which suits the running style of Gelroy, giving him an advantage,” Khwalsingh told Quickgallopja.com.
Ridden with precision by Jaheim Anderson, Gelroy produced a late surge to capture the five-year-old and up non-winners of three by a length, stopping the clock at 1:01.4. Lucy On The Go (Shaheem Gordon) finished second, with Radam settling for third.
Khwalshingh credited Anderson’s familiarity with the horse as a decisive factor.
“Gelroy has to be guided in a special way, and Anderson knows him well, having mounted up on multiple occasions in the past, including a victory in October of last year. Gelroy cannot be rushed. He has to race off the pace and waited on, for a final burst about a furlong from the winning post. Anderson executed the plan to perfection, and what was good to see was that he did not whip Gelroy once in the race,” the trainer added.
