If all goes according to plan this time, Zenyatta is set to be a mom again.
The champion mare’s website announced Tuesday that the 2010 Horse of the Year is in foal to Lane’s End Farm stallion Candy Ride, whose progeny includes six champions, among them Gun Runner.
Zenyatta, who makes her home at Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky., is expecting a filly.
“Over the years we’ve seen how happy she is with a foal by her side, and we can’t wait to share this journey with you,” the Zenyatta.com update reads.
While nearly perfect on the racetrack, winning 19 of 20 starts with her only defeat coming by a head to Blame in her career finale, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic, Zenyatta has had a checkered career as a broodmare.
Most recently, the daughter of Street Cry lost her 2018 foal by Into Mischief. A 2014 War Front filly also died in a paddock incident, and her 2016 foal by War Front passed away shortly after birth.
Zenyatta has produced two horses — Cozmic One (a 7-year-old by Bernardini) and Ziconic (a 6-year-old by Tapit) to race. Both are retired after going winless and now pursuing second careers as eventers.
Zenyatta also has a 2017 filly named Zellda, by Medaglia d’Oro, in training.
All progeny have been owned and campaigned by Zenyatta’s owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, with John Shirreffs their trainer.
