Wow Wow gave an astonishing display of speed and sheer power not seen in a while by a juvenile in the Restricted Stakes call for native-bred and imported two-year-olds run for the $3-million Bearings & Accessories Trophy at Caymanas Park on Saturday (September 21). The race was run over 5 ½ furlongs.

THE RACE

A field of five faced the starter following the late at the gate withdrawal of Another Prosecutor. When the gates were opened, as expected the filly England’s Rose (Omar Walker) went to the lead with Wow Wow (Ameth Robles) sitting relaxed  some four lengths behind. England’s Rose started to increase her lead but leaving the three-furlong marker, Wow Wow made a sweeping move going by the front runner effortlessly. In the straight, Wow Wow looked invincible as he powered away to record his third win from four starts. England’s Rose struggled badly but still held for second while Tomohawk ended in the third spot. The winning time was a howling 1:05.1 with fast splits of 22.2 x 45.4. Wow Wow won by 10 lengths.

THE TRAINER’S COMMENTS

For trainer of the bay colt, Gary Subratie, it was a racing moment to cherish.

“I was expecting a really big run from him (Wow Wow) today. He trained well coming into this race and he seems to be getting better and better with every race. After the race when Wow Wow came into the winners’ enclosure he was breathing as if he did not run a race more over a race in which he clocked such a fast time for his stage of development. I was expecting a good run but truly, I was not anticipating such a performance and to run 1:05.1 in the manner he did was simply breathtaking. Yet for all juveniles, it is early days yet to say what they will achieve in the future but for Wow Wow he has thrown down the gauntlet for all the others, so it is now a matter of keeping him healthy and strong for his next engagement,” trainer Subratie offered.

THE OWNER’S COMMENTS

For owner and breeder of Wow Wow, Michael Bernard, it was another special moment.

“It was anticipating something out of the ordinary from Wow Wow and thankfully he delivered and delivered spectacularly.  This was no ordinary run by Wow Wow as he demonstrated the capabilities of his bloodline (Casual Trick – Sarah Barracuda).

“The trainer will decide where he goes from here but to breed a horse like Wow Wow is amazing and right now I am a very proud man,” Bernard said.

CONCLUSION

This performance by Wow Wow is the best since Princess Popstar in 2013. It is not often that a youngster draws closed mouths and expressions of wonder from local punters and Wow Wow did just that on Saturday. More than likely Wow Wow is going to run three more races for the year, the three-race in the two-year-old series.
