Sparkling Plenty produced a late flourish to snatch the Prix de Diane (French Oaks) by a mere head at Chantilly on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
English raider Tamfana was well fancied to make up for an unlucky fourth in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket but the 3-1 joint favourite had to settle for third, half a length back from runner-up Survie.
The winner of France's premier fillies classic was trained locally by Patrice Cottier and ridden by Tony Piccone, who acted as super-sub for regular jockey Cristian Demuro.
"It's unbelievable, I don't know what to say. My first thought is for Cristian Demuro who should have ridden but has an injured hand. But straight away we thought of Tony Piccone, who did such a good job," said Cottier.
"Honestly it's strange. I'm happy but it hasn't sunk in yet," said 36-year-old Piccone after landing his first Prix de Diane.
Tamfana was out in front with 400m to go but behind Piccone was getting to work on Sparkling Plenty who appeared late on the scene to snatch the prize in the shadow of the post.
David Menuisier, the trainer of Tamfana, summed up his emotions at going so close in three words: "Joy and sadness".
