KINGSTON, Jamaica – In a fitting tribute to the great Eros, in whose honour the ninth race on the Saturday card of July 30, 2022, was named, King Arthur (Anthony Thomas) won the battle of the former Derby winners with a half-a-length victory over Calculus (Shane Ellis).
When the seven–furlong trophy event started favourite Runaway Algo (Dick Cardenas) was not the best away but coupled quickly to assume control on the front end.
Runaway Algo was followed by Eroy (Javaniel Patterson) and I’ve Got Magic (Jordan Barrett). King Arthur and Calculus raced just behind the leading pack.
Runaway Algo carried the field round the bend to enter the straight with a slight advantage. At this time King Arthur got a clear run on the inside with Calculus looming for his effort three wide.
Thomas had to work hard to get by Runaway Algo and as soon as King Arthur gained the lead Calculus came a calling, with King Arthur galloping resolutely to win by half-a-length. The long shot on the board Money Monster at 89-1 ran on for third place.
