Keeneland has addressed the actions of an assistant starter, whose pre-race conduct was visible on the track’s live feed ahead of race three on April 16, 2026.
In a video clip of the live feed posted to X (formerly Twitter) and viewed over 500,000 times, the assistant starter can be seen aggressively swinging a long rope- or whip-like item toward a horse that was hesitant to load.
The incident drew ire on social media. The original individual who posted the video clip commented, “I don’t care how difficult a horse is being while loading. Do not do this, on camera no less. … Racing doesn’t have a license to do this shit. Optics matter.”
Keeneland provided the following statement regarding the incident: “Keeneland is committed to a culture of safety and welfare for the horse and has a zero-tolerance policy for this type of behavior. We quickly addressed the situation, and this individual has been dismissed.”
