Frankie Dettori's hope to make the second Kentucky Derby start in his storied career came to fruition as he was named to ride Society Man on Saturday (May 4) at Churchill Downs.
Agent Ron Anderson confirmed a Daily Racing Form report that Dettori will ride the Good Magic colt for trainer Danny Gargan.
Dettori's only other Kentucky Derby mount came in 2000, when he finished sixth on China Visit. The three-time UK championed had planned to retire last year but changed his mind in the fall, saying he would move his base to Southern California.
He then won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf aboard Inspiral and followed that this year with five more graded-stakes wins, most recently the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley with Beaute Cachee for his first graded win at Keeneland.
Society Man became eligible for the Kentucky Derby with his second-place finish in the Wood Memorial (G2). That was his first start since he broke his maiden in March.
