The North America crop of Thoroughbred foals fell 3.4% from the same time last year, The Jockey Club reported Tuesday.
There were 1,099 stallions who covered 27,180 mares in 2024, according to statistics compiled through last Monday. These breedings resulted in 17,103 live foals of 2025 being reported to The Jockey Club on live-foal reports.
The Jockey Club estimates the number of live foals reported so far is 85-90% complete. The reporting of live foals of 2024 is down 3.4% from last year at this time when reports had been received for 17,700 live foals of 2024.
In addition, The Jockey Club also received 1,887 no-foal reports for the 2025 season. Ultimately, the 2025 registered foal crop is projected to reach 17,300.
The number of stallions declined 6.9% from the 1,181 reported for 2023 at this time last year, and the number of mares bred declined 3.3% from the 28,104 reported for 2023.
Kentucky annually leads all states and provinces in terms of Thoroughbred breeding activity. Kentucky-based stallions accounted for 61% of the mares reported bred in North America in 2024 and 66% of the live foals reported for 2025.
The 16,686 mares reported bred to 204 Kentucky stallions in 2024 have produced 11,288 live foals, a 2.7% decrease from the 11,605 Kentucky-sired live foals of 2024 reported at this time last year. The number of mares reported bred to Kentucky stallions in 2024 decreased 2.2% compared with the 17,056 reported for 2023 at this time last year.
