Logician laid down a serious St Leger marker with a smooth-as-silk performance under Frankie Dettori in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.
John Gosden's grey son of Frankel came home a length and three-quarters to the good over Constantinople, but a round of applause breaking out among the York crowd around a furlong from the finish gives a better indication as to the 10/11 favourite's manner of victory.
Sky Bet reacted by making the unbeaten Logician their 2/1 favourite for the William Hill St Leger at Doncaster next month.
Dettori had the winner settled comfortably off the pace set by Constantinople's stablemate Norway through the early stages of the race before bringing him with a nice run towards the inside of the track around three furlongs from the finish.
Ryan Moore tried to track him through on the held-up Constantinople, but Logician simply went through the gears without Dettori having to get anything like serious in the saddle.
He was eased down with 100 yards to travel to readily land Gosden his fifth Voltigeur success and will now bid to follow in the hoofprints of Lucarno who won the race en route to St Leger glory for Gosden in 2017.
Gosden said: "I couldn't be more pleased with him. He's still a tender, young horse who had won a maiden, a novice and a handicap, so it was a big jump.
"He's going the right way. We'll see how he is in the next 10 days before we make any decision as to where he goes next.
"There is one obvious option (Leger), but there are other options if you stay at a mile and a half.
"I need to speak to the jockey and the racing manager. There are a lot of discussions to be had in the next 10 days."
Dettori said: "He did it well, but he's not the finished article yet. I think with every race he's improving and I suspect he'll take another leap forward.
"He's a nice horse. When you win a trial like this, obviously you're going to be tempted to have a go (at the Leger), but it's up to the owner and the trainer. I was impressed."
