Long-standing trainer Fitzgerald ‘Treadie’ Richards has endured a punishing 2025 campaign, saddling just two winners from 21 starters. The most recent came on Saturday, September 13, when his stable star Ability finally reignited the spark that once made him a Jamaica Derby champion.

Ability, making only his second appearance this year after a long layoff since June 7, lined up in a top-level claiming event without a tag over seven furlongs. With apprentice Emelio McLean aboard and the tongue tie removed, Ability surged clear of his rivals, cruising home by 5½ lengths in a solid final time of 1:27.3. This was the seventh career win by Ability.

Quickgallopja.com caught up with Richards following the win.

QUICKGALLOPJA.COM (QG): How did Ability come out of Saturday’s race? FITZGERALD RICHARDS (FR): So far, everything looks positive. We’re still monitoring him, but initial checks suggest he’s come through well.

QG: What does this win mean for Ability?

FR: It’s a foundation. If he stays well, this could be the start of a strong return. We’re hopeful he’ll build on this.

QG: Why has Ability raced so sparingly in 2025?

FR: It’s been a tough road. He’s had his share of setbacks, and we’ve had to be patient. It’s taken time—more than we expected—but we’ve stayed the course, and now we’re seeing signs of progress.

QG: Your overall season has been difficult. What’s behind the numbers?

FR: After so many years in the game, I know the highs and lows come with the territory. This season’s been rough, no doubt, but I remain committed—to the horses, the owners, and the grooms. The work never stops.

QG: How many horses are currently in your care?

FR: Thirteen.

QG: Any two-year-olds among them?

FR: Yes, four of the thirteen are juveniles.

QG: Will any of those juveniles debut this year?

FR: Two are showing promise. If things continue on track, they should make their debut before year-end.

QG: Trainer, all the best going forward.

FR: Thank you. My best to you and the team at The Quick Galloper.
