KINGSTON, Jamaica – The obvious highlight of the day was the well-worked four-timer by Anthony ‘St Mary’ Thomas who was in an inspired mood especially with a rather beautiful young lady making her presence in the winners’ enclosure on three of the four occasions for the photo opportunities.
It is not unusual for Thomas to ride triples or four timers these days partly due to the steadfast work of his agent plus his dedication and discipline to his chosen profession.
What, however, was noticeable about Thomas’ four winners on the day was that the four winners were for four different trainers.
First, there was Markofaprince for Anthony Nunes; then Corazon sin Miedo for Kebbeisha Little (her first win this year); Elitist for Jason DaCosta, and Eroy for Richard Azan.
This result probably is an indication that Thomas’ agent is doing the rounds of the stables in his quest to provide the best available rides for his client and, of course, the attitude of Thomas himself.
THE TRAINERS
Patrick “Wacky” Lynch was the leader in this grouping with two wins but while none of his winners Inspired Miracle, nor Contractor excited race goers, Lynch continued a trend we have been seeing in recent times.
Over the last four race days trainers Fitzgerald Richards, Jason DaCosta, Anthony Nunes, and now Lynch have all had one-two-three finishes in a single race. Nunes even went further as on the same day he had his one-two-three finish, he also has a one-two-three-four result.
Of note is that all the big trainers, Nunes, DaCosta, Lynch, and Subratie all had winners on the nine-race programme.
With the completion of the Classic races on August 7, Subratie jumped to the lead in the trainers’ championship by just over $1 million.
Nunes responded two days later with a double to regain the lead and followed up on Saturday (Aug 14) with success in bottom claiming. Subratie gained a small amount because of the higher-class victory by Sentient.
Subratie is trying his best to compete but it is going to be difficult to surpass Nunes who has his two-year-olds to bank on. Subratie in a recent interview admitted that he has a shortage of two-year-olds when compared with Nunes. He added that for him to win a first championship his horses from Overnight up must deliver.
Interesting days are ahead in this year’s championship.
THE HORSES
The return to some sort of form by Sentient is good as the system needs more horses in the top grade.
Eroy seems to be finally realising his potential with a pronounced win at the Open Allowance level. It has taken time for this importee to show his worth and the hope now is for him to develop even further.
Entering Overnight for the first time, the undefeated Make Up Artist found the going tough and was never a winning factor. She will earn her spurs in this grade.
