Three-year-olds dominate the category led by Further and Beyond 

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The 2021 Racing Year has already been placed in the historical archives of local horse racing. It was another year of survival for the racing industry mainly due to the continued presence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yet the industry endured and with it the continued employment of several who either ply their trades directly or indirectly in the horse racing business.

The statistics for the various groupings are available and the leading horses' category is the subject of consideration by THE QUICK GALLOPER in this article published below.

LEADING HORSES

Until the race day of Sunday, December 26, the top earner was She’s A Wonder, winner of the Oaks and the 1000 Guineas. This filly was followed by Derby and St Leger winner Calculus, with Further and Beyond occupying the third slot.

On December 26, Further and Beyond won the Ian Levy Cup which carried a total purse of $4 million dollars. Calculus finished second while She’s A Wonder was nowhere around in the $2 million Chris Armond Sprint Trophy on Monday, December 27.

That win by Further and Beyond saw him vault to the top with earnings of $10,361,050, and this was without winning any of the Classic three-year-old Classic races. Further and Beyond raced 10 times, winning five times, and was never off the board. Calculus eventually finished in the second spot with She’s A Wonder third.

Six of the top 10 earners in 2021 are three-year-olds, in fact, the top four on the list are three-year-olds; Further and Beyond, Calculus, She’s A Wonder, and Billy Whizz in that order. In total there are six three-year-olds on the top 10 list, the others being Secret Identity (seventh) and Miniature Man, winner of the 2000 Guineas in tenth place.

Father Patrick, the winner of the Chris Armond, is the first on the list in position number 5, of the older horses. The others are King Arthur (four-year-old – position number 8); Duke (five-year-old – position number 6), and Crimson (five-year-old – position number 9).

The horse with the best winning percentage is She’s A Wonder (60 % - with six wins from 10 starts; followed by Further and Beyond (50% - five wins from 10 starts); and Miniature Man (43% - three wins from 7 starts).
