KINGSTON, Jamaica – The following is the analysis of THE PORTMORE run on Saturday, May 7, 2022. THE PORTMORE was competed over 7 ½ furlongs and was limited to three-year-old fillies.
FIRST: Atomica – This run by Atomica to win THE PORTMORE is the stuff dreams are made of, four wins from four starts with a stakes record time to cap the occasion. Already comparisons are being made between Atomica and She’s A Maneater. THE QUICK GALLOPER has stayed away from such conversations as it is futile to compare these two horses at this time. THE GALLOPER believes that such a comparison can only begin to take shape after the running of the Jamaica Derby in August. It is hard to believe that Atomica was bought in the Yearling Sale for only $700,000. Just goes to show that any number can play in this game they call horse racing. WELL, DONE TO THE CONNECTIONS!
SECOND: Our Angel – This was the surprise filly in THE PORTMORE, who came late in the proceedings to snatch second place for her trainer Robert Pearson. This was an encouraging effort by this filly by Savoy Stomp out of My Angel even though she was allowed weight by the winner Atomica. Based on this performance in THE PORTMORE by Our Angel, going longer in the 1000 Guineas and the other Classic races to come will be to her liking.
THIRD – Silent Mission – Ran her usual consistent race without creating any fuss for the winner.
FOURTH: Nefertari – Gave her usual share of trouble at the starting gates. Raced prominently but the expected late kick as in her former races did not materialise. Her trainer champion Anthony Nunes needs to solve the issues facing this filly to get the best out of her.
FIFTH: Golden Wattle – Let’s be truthful, this was a disappointing run by the champion two-year-old. As her trainer has said in various interviews since her time as a two-year-old, Golden Wattle is very difficult to train, and as such, locking into a specific training regime is problematic. Until a way is found by Nunes, Golden Wattle will continue to race as she did in THE PORTMORE
SIXTH: Fly Messenger Fly– The most experienced in terms of the number of races run earned again.
SEVENTH: Prncsshootingstar – Led as was expected and then dropped out as expected. Prncsshootingstar is an out-and-out sprinter.
EIGHTH: Sunset Silhoutte – Not much was expected and nothing was given.
NINTH: Rupunzel – Never a winning factor.
