The ninth of ten races on Sunday’s (November 23) card is the feature event, the Alsafra Trophy. Named in honour of Alsafra, one of the rare fillies in Jamaica’s racing history to capture the coveted Triple Crown, this contest is staged over 7 ½ furlongs and is open to three-year-olds and upwards horses at the Overnight Allowance grade.

A field of eleven runners has been declared, and The Quick Galloper provides a detailed assessment of their prospects.

1 – MR LEE

Ordinarily, entry into Overnight Allowance requires four victories for locally bred horses. Mr Lee has managed only two, leaving him short of the necessary credentials. On that basis, he appears an unlikely candidate for success.

2 – D HEAD CORNERSTONE

Returned to Overnight Allowance after being claimed on 18 October, finishing fifth, 8 ½ lengths behind Is That A Fact. A steady performer at this level, D Head Cornerstone is capable of holding his own and should be considered for a minor placing.

3 – NEO STAR

Recent form has been uninspiring, with little to suggest a breakthrough is imminent. A significant improvement will be required if Neo Star is to trouble the principals.

4 – DIGITAL ONE

Re-entered Overnight Allowance on October 19, finishing a close second to Dotraki over 5 ½ furlongs despite a poor start. Skipped both the Port Royal Sprint and the St Elizabeth Distaff on Jamaica Cup Day (November 16) to target this race. Expected to track the leaders before delivering a decisive challenge.

5 – SUPREMASI

A model of consistency at this level, Supremasi has faced strong opposition in recent outings. The trip suits him perfectly, and a more polished effort is anticipated. He must be respected.

6 – FURTHER AND BEYOND

Once a formidable competitor, Further And Beyond has struggled to reproduce past brilliance. Advancing years appear to be catching up with him, and he may find this company too demanding.

7 – INTRESTNTIMESAHEAD

An unpredictable runner, capable of both strong and lacklustre performances. His second-place finish behind Unspun on September 28 (beaten only 1 ½ lengths) suggests he retains ability. If repeating that effort, he could be a serious contender.

8 – LION CHARMER

Even with the removal of blinkers, Lion Charmer looks outclassed at present. Difficult to recommend.

9 – ABILITY

Last successful in claiming company, Ability now returns to Overnight Allowance. Possesses the class to make an impact and has been showing encouraging signs in morning workouts. A bold showing is expected.

10 – DIVINE FORCE

A foreign import making his first start for new connections. His recent form has been modest, with only one win this season (in May). Equipped with a tongue tie for the first time, Divine Force may improve but remains a question mark.

11 – PROVIDENT

Has demonstrated admirable consistency since stepping into Overnight Allowance. A reliable type who should be included in exotic wagers.

THE QUICK GALLOPER’S VERDICT

The Alsafra Trophy promises a competitive renewal. Digital One appears primed to strike, with Supremasi and Ability close behind as the main dangers. Provident offers solid value for those seeking reliability in the exotics.
