KINGSTON, Jamaica – The first race day of February was ignited by the presence of the apprentices who won seven of the 10 races on offer.
The way was led for the young riders by Christopher Mamdeen who rode a triple, Jamaican Citizen, Big Black Nation and Storm Princess. By virtue of winning these three races, Mamdeen joins Trevor Simpson at the top of the jockey’s list with 10 winners each. Simpson was winless on the day.
The other apprentices who rode winners were Shavon Townsend (Okahumpka); Reyan Lewis (Date To Speak); Tevin Foster (Ballon D’Or) and Samantha Fletcher (One Soo True).
It was really nice to see Fletcher, one of three females to graduate from the last cohort in September of last year doing so well. She is very committed to her trade, works hard and has a lot of detrmination.  To date Samantha has brought home three winners for this season and six overall in her career.
The three other races not won by the apprentices saw Dane Nelson taking the nightcap on Lord Ashton, Robert Halledeen winning on the impressive Supreme Soul and Omar Walker taking the feature Alex Hamilton Trophy on Superluminal.
Walker had to pull out all the stops on Superluminal in the Open Allowance event run over a mile riding hard to thwart the challenge of Saratoga Sight and Aaron Chatrie in the last ½ a furlong. Superluminal also gave his trainer Ian Persard another winner this term.
Supreme Soul had to be pushed out to the maximum to hold the relentless challenge of Universal Boss who raced just three days before on the mid-week card.
Supreme Soul covered seven and a half furlongs in a very smart time of 1:31.4 and is now the overwhelming favourite for the 2000 Guineas, the first Classic of 2019.
Supreme Soul (Soul Warrior – Beware Baby), trained by Anthony Nunes is a half-brother to top campaigner Bigdaddykool.
