Runaway Star’s talent was evident early. As a three-year-old, the chestnut colt won the seven-furlong Prince Consort on April 12, 2025, a major prep for the Classics. He was later disqualified, and the race was awarded to Honour Prince. It was only the third start of his career.
He returned on May 4 in the 7½-furlong The Kingston (2025), finishing second, just half a length behind Sensational Soul. Then injuries forced a long spell away from racing, more than a year and a half, as trainer Jason DaCosta and the colt’s connections focused on his recovery.
Runaway Star’s comeback on September 27, 2026, ended abruptly when his jockey fell shortly after the start of a four-year-old non-winners-of-two race over 7½ furlongs. The colt had another chance on October 10, in a four-furlong non-winners-of-two event, and this time made it count.
With Tevin Foster aboard, Runaway Star broke prominently from an outside draw. Still racing green, he drifted toward the middle of the straight course before finding his stride. Under strong urging, the Northern Giant colt pulled clear to win convincingly in 48.1 seconds.
Rush of Class, ridden by Dane Dawkins, finished second, while Enthusiastic and Raddesh Roman took third.
“It took a while, a lot of work from the team, and a lot of patience from the owners, but the wait is now rewarded,” DaCosta told this website. He added that Runaway Star should now go on to fulfil his conditions.
The win gives Runaway Star a career record of two victories from six starts, with earnings of just over $2 million.
