KINGSTON, Jamaica – Regnant a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Midnight Hawk – Mama Blossom enhanced his status as a strong Classic candidate with a facile victory in the Caymanas Sunday seventh.
After finishing second to Calculus last week at six furlongs, a race in which he lost a shoe, Regnant again with Shane Ellis in the saddle, stepped up in distance by half a furlong and delivered a quite noticeable performance.
He disputed the lead with foreigner newcomer Awesome Liz (Dane Dawkins) with the other five starters way behind.
With three furlongs to go, Ellis pushed Regnant to the lead and the gelding responded in blazing fashion pulling off to win by 4 ½ lengths.
Awesome Liz was second and Alimony (Anthony Thomas) third.
