KINGSTON, Jamaica - Provident, racing for the first time on Saturday last (Sat, April 20) made a respectable start to his racing career with a come from behind victory.
The three-year-old chestnut colt by Sensational Slam out of Dream Point, trained by Jason DaCosta with visiting Panamanian jockey Josue Osorio holding the reins, got off to a poor beginning, strolling out of his barrier, while dipping his head.
Osorio was able to quickly get Provident straight, settling at the back of the pack. Slowly, and with confidence, the young rider gradually plotted his forward thrust slowly getting by opponents, one by one, to enter the lane in a striking position.
A battle then ensured with Mack And Rome (Robert Halledeen), with Provident digging deep to earn his first win by 2 ¼ lengths. The final time was recorded at 1:23.0 for the contested distance of 6 ½ furlongs in the three-year-old maiden event.
While the connections are pleased with the first effort of Provident, it is too early to go beyond hoping for the best. It will be interesting, if Provident is fit for purpose, if trainer DaCosta will start his charge in The Kingston, which is scheduled for the first weekend of May.
Time will tell!
