KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jockey Phillip Parchment used his strength along with his never say die attitude to gain victory on the Marlon Anderson trained Zion in the Caymanas Saturday fifth at upsetting odds of 27-1.
Zion, who was racing for the third time, gained his first win in a Maiden Special Weight (three-year-olds) at the distance of 7 ½ furlongs.
The race quickly developed into a two-horse affair as soon as the starter let the 12 starters out. This duel involved Zion, racing on the rails, and Clara’s Vision (Hakeem Pottinger). It was Zion and Parchment who carried the lot for most of the way until Pottinger made a decisive move leaving the three-furlong marker.
The two entered the lane close to each other with Clara’s Vision, on the outside, gaining a slight advantage, but true to form, Parchment changed his hold, and then started to pump, like never before, with Zion rallying to get the win by three parts of a length over Clara’s Vision.
Itz What Itz (Odeen Edwards) ran on well for third, with 4-5 favourite Miss HJF (Omar Walker) fourth.
