KINGSTON, Jamaica - After racing three times, Nephew, a US-bred three-year-old bay colt, achieved the first aim of his career on February 23, 2025, crossing the finish line ahead of rivals, defeating another US-bred horse, Girvano, by a head at 6 ½ furlongs.
However, Nephew, ridden by Trevor Simpson, was disqualified due to interference caused to Girvano.
Trained by Owen Sharpe, Nephew returned to the track on Saturday, March 22, this time with four-kilogramme claiming apprentice Demar Williams in the saddle.
Competing in a three-year-old maiden race against foreign contenders at the same distance of 6 ½ furlongs, Nephew was kept off the early pace set by the well-backed first-time starter, Incredible Jo (Shane Ellis).
Displaying maturity, Williams patiently saved ground along the inside rails. As they approached the furlong marker, Nephew took charge and pulled away from the pack, ultimately winning by 1 ¼ lengths with a notable time of 1:20.1. H Two O finished in second place, while Incredible Jo secured third.
Nephew’s credentials were further bolstered the following day when Girvano claimed victory for the second time, this time over seven furlongs.
Nephew is one to watch.
