The Arthur Jones Memorial Cup, a six-furlong sprint that has grown in prestige over the years, found its latest heroine in the fleet-footed Mamma Mia, who justified her 4-5 favouritism with a performance that was equal parts poise and grit at Caymanas Park on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
Owned by veteran Carlton Watson and conditioned by Jason DaCosta, Mamma Mia was entrusted to the capable hands of Robert Halledeen. From the moment the gates flew open, the chestnut mare seized control of the tempo, gliding to the front with fluidity.
She coasted through the half-mile turn with measured ease, clocking splits of 23.1 and 47.1, and by the time the field straightened for home, the race looked all but settled. Mamma Mia widened her advantage, her stride lengthening with purpose, and for a fleeting moment, the crowd’s attention shifted from suspense to celebration.
But horse racing, ever the theatre of unpredictability, had one final act.
From mid-pack, Fearless Force—piloted by the quietly rising Tyrese Anderson—launched a bold and belated rally. With each stride, the margin narrowed, and the grandstand buzzed with the possibility of an upset. Yet Halledeen, sensing the threat, asked Mamma Mia for more, and she responded with just enough to repel the challenge. The winning margin: three-quarters of a length. The final time: 1:13.1, with a closing fraction of 59.4.
Perfect Brew, under Raddesh Roman, ran a game race to secure third, but the spotlight belonged to the mare who dared to lead from the front and refused to surrender.
