KINGSTON, Jamaica – Consistency paid off for the connections of Lure of Lucy as the five-year-old bay mare picked up a well-deserved win in the top-rated Overnight Allowance event for three-year-olds and upwards over five furlongs straight on Saturday, July 22, 2023.

Trained by Jason DaCosta and ridden by Reyan Lewis, Lure of Lucy came from behind runners to score by 2¼ lengths going away in a time of 1:00.4.

Lure of Lucy broke off well behind runners at the start of the race and watched as Power Ranking (Dane Dawkins), Luksol (Jordan Barrett) and Snowflakes (Marshall Porter) matched strides on the front end.

As the runners sorted themselves out passing the dummy rails, Lure of Lucy and Freedom Street (Javaniel Patterson) came up and challenged Luksol and Power Ranking for the lead.

Inside the final furlong (200m), Lure of Lucy found extra and powered herself to an emphatic win. Power Ranking was second and Luksol finished third.

“As you know, this horse [Lure of Lucy], she loves the five straight, so I was confident of her chances coming into the race,” Lewis said.

“The trainer [DaCosta] said to get a good break, put her out there and make her relax on the bit, and ask her to run once we came across the quarter. She stumbled at the start but I didn’t get frustrated and I just ask her and she picked it up — and that was that,” Lewis added.
