The stage is set for the Jamaica Day race programme, with the fifth running of the Jamaica Cup, a Graded Stakes contest for three-year-olds and upwards over 9 ½ furlongs, taking centre stage.
Twelve horses will load into the gates for the final of the ‘Win and You’re In’ Mouttet Mile qualifiers.
Below is The Quick Galloper’s assessment of each contender:
1 – CROWN CHASER
Crown Chaser has done well to progress to Overnight Allowance level. However, stepping up to Graded Stakes company is a bridge too far for the former Derby winner, who appears outclassed at this stage.
2 – CAPTAIN SPARROW
Unlikely to make any meaningful impact.
3 – UNSPUN (USA)
Last year’s champion juvenile has yet to fulfil expectations, lingering between Overnight and Open Allowance. The addition of a visor may sharpen him, but it is doubtful he can mount a serious winning challenge.
4 – H TWO O (USA)
A late withdrawal from the race.
5 – RUN JULIE RUN
Among the locally bred runners, Run Julie Run has struggled against the likes of Commandant, Funcaandun, Desert of Malibu, Rideallday, and Is That A Fact in recent outings. She does, however, show her best form over two turns, and while the foreign-breds are formidable, she deserves respect for her stamina and consistency.
6 – PROPELLANT (USA)
Not expected to feature prominently.
7 – FUNCAANDUN (USA)
The reigning Horse of the Year disappointed when finishing sixth in the recent Gold Cup over 7 furlongs. Despite that blip, his credentials remain strong: two wins from five starts this season, proven class, and a reputation for delivering in big races. He shoulders top weight at 57.0kgs (126 lb), but his pedigree and preparation suggest he will be a major force.
8 – TIZ TOK (USA)
A steadily improving runner who could emerge as a potential contender. His recent performances indicate progress, and he possesses the quality to trouble the leaders if continuing on this upward curve.
9 – MOJITO
This local-bred colt impressed when winning over 9 furlongs and 25 yards, timing 1:55.2 seconds on September 14. Mojito is expected to make a bold bid, and his proven ability over the distance makes him a genuine contender.
10 – MAMMA MIA
Renowned for her early speed, Mamma Mia is likely to act as a pacemaker for her stablemates rather than a serious challenger in the closing stages.
11 – SHEER DELIGHT (USA)
Has been disappointing and lacks the necessary firepower to trouble the principals.
12 – GIRVANO (USA)
A campaigner who thrives over two turns. Already qualified for the Mouttet Mile with six victories this season, Girvano’s strong finishing kick in the final furlongs makes him one of the leading contenders.
THE GALLOPER’S VERDICT
The Jamaica Cup promises a fascinating clash between proven class and emerging talent. Funcaandun enters with top credentials and, despite the weight, should be right in the mix. Girvano is a formidable two-turn specialist and will be charging late, while Mojito and Run Julie Run represent the best of the local-breds. Tiz Tok could get close if continuing his upward trajectory.
