KINGSTON, Jamaica - The feature on Thursday, May 23, 2024, is the annual renewal of the Labour Day Trophy.
This trophy call is for three-year-olds and older horses at the Overnight Allowance level.
The distance is seven furlongs, with this year’s edition featuring three horses, Sistren Treasure, Thalita, and D Head Cornerstone, who have not faced the starter in a long while.
The Quick Galloper’s analysis of the possible outcome of the Labour Day Trophy is published below for the scrutiny of readers.
1 - SISTREN TREASURE has not raced since January 27. Her last victory was achieved on December 16, 2023 (one mile) in Overnight Allowance beating Sonny T And Chippy and Further And Beyond. Returned well freshened by her trainer and will give her best, which is good enough for an earning position on the board.
2 - FRED THE GREAT enters the region of Overnight Allowance for the first time. Fred The Great has had nine racetrack appearances to date, winning on three occasions. He will need to get acquainted with the pace of this new grouping.
3 - REGAL AND ROYAL signalled a return to form on last (May 4) when finishing second four lengths behind Sir John. That, however, was in a claiming event. Stepping up in grade will not be easy for Regal And Royal.
4 - THALITA returns to the starting gates for the first time since her participation in the 2023 Jamaica Derby {August 7}. She has had to overcome some health issues but has been a regular at morning exercise for the last three to four months. Thalita races against older horses for the first time in her career but is packed with sufficient class to handle these rivals. However, racing for the first time in 290 days is a live threat facing Thalita.
5 - GET A PEPSI was a winner at this level just 25 days ago. He is a proven and consistent campaigner who will find seven furlongs right up his street. Get A Pepsi will be there at decision time.
6 - D HEAD CORNERSTONE is another coming off a lengthy break, in his case 88 days. He has been pinging around in Overnight Allowance for a while now, where he has produced some good results. D Head Cornerstone has not visited the winners’ enclosure for a while, and will more than likely do so in short order.
7 - RANI BANGALA after her scintillating effort on October 15, 2023, when winning and clocking 1:38.3 for a mile, has not been able to repeat that form. Rani Bangala has gained experience and therefore cannot be disregarded from consideration.
8 - BIG ARGUMENT has no realistic chance of winning.
9 - STOP THE RHYTHM has had a lengthy run in Overnight gaining his last success on August 23. Stomp The Rhythm has been sparingly raced in 2024, with only two starts. Yet, he has demonstrated enough to keep him among the principals.
