KINGSTON, Jamaica - Saturday, November 12, 2022, was a telling day in the race for the trainers’ championship.

In this race, which has always been confined to the top three since the start of the season, namely champion Anthony Nunes, Jason DaCosta, and Gary Subratie took a significant turn.

DaCosta entered Jamaica Day, approximately $8 million ahead of Nunes, with Subratie just about $4 million behind Nunes,

Jamaica Day belonged to Subratie, and to a lesser extent DaCosta.

Subratie with his one–two finish in the rich Jamaica Cup with Atomica and Crimson, plus smatterings from the likes of Duke, and Alexa’s Dream, was able to accumulate approximately $4.6 million.

DaCosta had 15 starters on Jamaica Day, with all but one, King Arthur failing to bring home a cheque. The young conditioner saddled two winners She’s My Destiny in the St Elizabeth Distaff, and Tek A Punt in a three-year-old non-winners of two event.

In addition, DaCosta had three second-place finishes with Make Up Artist, Madelyn’s Sunshine, and Fly Messenger Fly, to bring his earnings on the day to just over $4 million.

For Nunes, Jamaica Day 2022, is one to quickly forget. Nunes had two non-starters on the day, Howilookin, and One Of A Kind, and none of his other entrants earned for the stables.

At the completion of Jamaica, the standings are as follows (SEE TABLE ATTACHED IN ARTICLE}:

Jason DaCosta $62,168,270, Gary Subratie $49,735,930, and Nunes $49,200,605. These figures indicate that Subratie has now overtaken Nunes by $535,325.

At the top, DaCosta has a lead of $12,432,340, but is this enough for a championship win?

The big-money races left among the two-year-olds this season are the Pick Three, and the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes. In these two races, at the present time, DaCosta holds the upper hand, with the likes of Mamma Mia and Thalita.

Nunes has a few cards among the juveniles, including Legit Boss, Red Ash, Milos, and Volatility. Plus, there are always two-year-olds lurking around in the mornings at exercise, especially from the bigger barns.

Subratie’s only two-year-old winner thus far in 2022, is a foreigner, who is not eligible to race in the money-spinning juvenile contests. Again it is emphasised that there are always two-year-olds lurking around in the mornings at exercise, especially from the bigger barns.

The big money races for the older horses this season are in the main, the Mouttet Mile, the Chris Armond Sprint, and the Ian Levy Cup.

The Mouttet Mile is the centre of gravity in the trainer’s championship with its massive winners’ purse of approximately $10 million.

This is where the strength of Subratie comes into play with Atomica, Calculus, and Crimson.

DaCosta can earn in the Mouttet Mile with I Am Fred, King Arthur, Miniature Man and She’s My Destiny his leading lights.

At present, Nunes does not have a suitable contender in the Mouttet Mile as Further And Beyond, last year’s winner is recuperating from surgery and Oneofakind does not seem to be at his best.

An interesting scenario has developed in the trainers’ championship, which only augurs well for racing fans.

The race days from now to December 31, 2022, are going to create genuine excitement. Keep a watch on.
