It took some time for the three-year-old chestnut colt Formalist to finally step onto the competitive racecourse, but when he did on Saturday, November 15, 2025, he announced himself in emphatic fashion. Contesting a five-furlong straight maiden, the son of Bold Conquest out of Miss Formality made his long-awaited debut one to remember.

Foaled on January 22, Formalist had been the subject of much chatter during morning gallops. His progress in training suggested that his first competitive appearance might prove little more than a formality. Punters clearly agreed, sending him off the odds-on favourite at 2-5 in a field of 14.

Drawn in stall six, jockey Robert Halledeen wasted no time in getting his mount into stride. Formalist travelled smoothly, edging across to mid-track and settling comfortably among the front rank. By the time two furlongs had been covered, the writing was already on the wall for his rivals. With scarcely a flicker of effort, Formalist lengthened away, leaving the remainder strung out behind.

He crossed the line with nearly seven lengths in hand, stopping the clock at an even minute, with sectional splits of 24.2 and 47.1. Nebuchadnezzar, partnered by Tajay Suckoo from the advantageous wide draw, chased home in second, while Feeling Free (Jereau Stewart) filled the third slot.

The ease of victory suggested that Formalist had simply been waiting for the right moment to unveil his talent. That his debut came so late in his three-year-old campaign hints at earlier setbacks, but on this evidence he has lost none of his potential. With six weeks remaining in the 2025 season, connections will surely be eyeing progression through the non-two and perhaps even non-three ranks.

Formalist has cleared his first hurdle with consummate ease. If he continues to thrive, this colt could well prove one to follow as the season draws to a close.
