KINGSTON, Jamaica – Madelyn’s Sunshine made an auspicious start to her racing career with an eye-catching victory in the Caymanas Saturday seventh.
That event was a three-year-old (non-two) for local bred horses and maiden for foreigners over five furlongs round.
Trained by Jason DaCosta and ridden by Anthony Thomas, Madelyn’s Sunshine stayed off the pace set by Bugatti (Tevin Foster). Bugatti’s lead was short-lived as he was quickly swooped on by Unruly Gal (Dane Nelson).
When the horses started to round the final part of the turn Perfect Brew (Robert Halledeen), the 3-5 favourite, and Madelyn’s Sunshine swooped forward together.
In the straight, Perfect Brew and Madelyn’s Sunshine were locked together but with a furlong and a half left in the contest, the foreigner pulled away to score her maiden victory by 1 ½ lengths in a final time of 1:00.3 with splits of 23.2 x 46.2. Third went to Gilbert (Shane Richardson).
Madelyn’s Sunshine provided jockey Thomas with his fourth winner on the day, and it was the third for DaCosta and owner Carlton Watson.
