KINGSTON, Jamaica – Emperorofthecats signalled his Classic intentions with a hard-fought victory in the 2022 running of the seven – furlong Prince Consort Stakes, a race designed as a major prep for the three-year-olds.
Bred, owned and trained by Carl ‘The Cat Man’ Anderson, Emperorofthecats with Bebeto Harvey doing the riding honours went to the lead when the gates open with Brinks (Omar Walker), the 4-5 on favourite, and Shadowfax (Reyan Lewis) following close by. Blue Vinyl (Dane Nelson) was slowly out of his starting barrier.
Down the backstretch, Emperorofthecats still carried the field but started to move away from rivals to enter the straight for the last two furlongs with a clear advantage.
In the final furlong, Emperorofthecats started to falter with Harvey doing everything possible to hold as from nowhere came Blue Vinyl on the inside rails. In a driving finish, Emperorofthecats held on by a short head. Third was Tekapunt (Phillip Parchment).
Emperorofthecats, who was winning his second race from two starts, clocked a final time of 1:27.0, which was the same time recorded yesterday by Atomica in the Thornbird Stakes.
